London Region Activities

Moscow Road, London W2 4LQ
Wednesday 20 September 2017 at 11.30

BAFUNCS has been invited to take a tour of this beautiful building guided by one of the Priests, who will talk about the history of the Cathedral as well as the nature of Eastern Orthodox religion and its practices.  There will the time for questions as well as private inspection of all the treasures, or contemplation and prayer.

This is the third in BAFUNCS London Region’s series of visits to architecturally remarkable religious buildings in the capital. There is no charge for the visit but individual donations towards the upkeep of the building would be welcomed and can be made on the day in the boxes provided (next to the candles).

St Sophia’s Cathedral is remarkable architecturally and historically, as well as being famous for its icons and mosaics.  It was designed by a British architect in the Byzantine Revival style, with a dome modelled on the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and was consecrated in 1882.  The lavish interior decoration includes British made mosaics and a screen of icons by a German painter.  The icons are remarkable for having faces which are more pre-Raphaelite than the conventional Greek style.  St Sophia’s was featured recently in the “Divine Designs” series on Channel 5.

Afterwards we have arranged for a Greek lunch to be served for those who wish at the Santorini restaurant at 10 Moscow Road (near the junction with Queensway).  This is newly refurbished after a change in management and now has 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor.  We shall be served a wide selection of vegetarian, fish and meat dishes at a fixed cost of £22 plus your choice of drinks and tips at your discretion.

We need to know numbers of guests and any dietary requirements, allergies, etc.
Please complete the attached booking form and return it to Maggie Heraty
before 09:00 on 18 September 2017.

Travel directions and access information are attached - please be on time, the doors should be open from 11.15 at the latest.
